The RMV updated its' website on March 26, 2018. Please see below for some explanations and guidance before you go on their site.

IF YOU DECIDE TO 'PROVE LAWFUL PRESENCE' ONLINE BEFORE YOUR ROAD TEST, MAKE SURE TO PRINT THE
CONFIRMATION AND BRING IT YOU TO THE TEST.
Massachusetts Learner's Permit Holders
As required by state and federal law, if you were issued a learner’s permit prior to March 26, 2018 and have not passed your road test by March 26th you will need to prove your U.S. citizenship or lawful presence before you receive your driver’s license.
ALL PERMIT HOLDER'S MUST EITHER GET A REAL ID OR PROVE LAWFUL PRESENCE BEFORE THEIR ROAD TEST
YOU MUST ALSO PREPAY THE $85 FOR THE 5 YR LICENSE IF NOT DONE ALREADY..NO EXCEPTIONS
You will also need to decide if you want a REAL ID Massachusetts driver’s license or a Standard Massachusetts driver’s license.
If you have not taken a road test yet, the RMV strongly recommends you provide this proof online if possible BEFORE the road test.
SO WHAT'S THE REAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM?
If you DON'T have a REAL ID, you can't fly on a plane or enter federal buildings after October 2020 unless you have a passport.
The STANDARD license is the same as what everyone currently has and can be done ONLINE.
That's about it!
Heck, you got over 2 years to go back to the RMV to get the REAL ID if you want one. We recommend proving lawful presence
for a standard license and you can go back and get a REAL ID before October 2020. SAVE TIME AND AVOID THE LINE!
For a REAL ID, YOU MUST visit an RMV Service Center with required documentation. For a Standard license, you are be able to do this online by inputting birth certificate or passport info under the 'PROVE LAWFUL PRESENCE' link. YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO GO TO THE RMV IF YOU WANT TO GET A STANDARD LICENSE AS YOU CAN PROVE LAWFUL PRESENCE ONLINE.
Passing the road test alone will NOT make you a licensed driver if you have not proved lawful presence.
You will remain a learner’s permit holder until you have provided the required documentation and passed a road test.
YOU MUST ALSO PREPAY FOR YOUR 5 YR LICENSE WITH THE RMV TO BE SCHEDULED FOR A WEEKEND TEST.
YOU WON'T SHOW AS ELIGIBLE FOR US TO BOOK YOU A WEEKEND TEST.... NO EXCEPTIONS.
